This story was submitted to the WW2 People's War Website by the London Borough of Harrow Housebound Library Service on behald of Mrs Lilian Walker, and has been added with her permission.

Toys were in very short supply and the Red Cross gave us some felt cut-outs of dolls, together with a celluloid face, and we were asked to sew them up and stuff them with bits of clean rag. These were sold at some kind of fair to put in Christmas stockings for children. My husband and his doctor friends on A.R.P. duty also made small boats out of balsa wood. I cut up so much rag that my scissors broke from metal fatigue!
