I was born July 1925 in the small village of Tugford
I started school at about five years of age walking the two miles to Abdon school where I continued until I left at the age of fourteen. July 1939. The war started that Year. We now moved to the upper house farm house, the farm had been taken over by the war agricultural committee, Dad having the job as farm bailiff working for C E Edwards of Seifton who was in charge of running several farms. I started work for him and worked on his other farms from time to time.
. The war did touch Tugford during this time,. My brother Jim had joined the RAF in 1938 before the war had started George Allen joined the RAF early in the war. Two Humphries brothers were directed down London way to help rebuilding bomb damage. We had evacuees from Liverpool. We had a lad Albert Ducket to stay with us, Land army girls were working on the farm, The Tugford wood was being cut down for timber and Land Army girls were tushing the timber out with horses to a field ready to be collected. Younger brother Stan was directed to Bees Seed at Chester to help with their work, Arthur Rowe village blacksmith became a special constable, (A very keen one. ), Dad joined the Home Guard and a German bomber dropped a string of bombs starting at Ballams Heath the last one dropped in a field close to the blacksmiths shop in Tugford. Not too much damage mostly broken windows.
The wooden village hall was well used during this time with dances, whist drives and
some times a play and other general use.
I was called up to join the army for the duration of emergencies April 21 1944 and
moved to the K S L I Barracks at Shrewsbury.
