RAF Sgt. John Wannop, standing on right, son of Charles and Agnes Wannop, Burrowgate, Penrith, Cumbria, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force 433 Squadron, and was killed on his first bombing operation over Berlin, on the night of January 30, 1944. The crew were flying a Halifax III LV-797 coded BM-L. Six other crew members were killed, these were: P/O G. Hagerman RCAF, F/Sgt. K. Hargreaves RCAF, P/O C. Phillips RCAF, P/O J. Charlton RCAF, P/O J. Watters RCAF. Sgt. M. Park-Taylor RCAF was taken as a prisoner of war. No. 433 Squadron was based at Skipton-on-Swale. John Wannop was a compositor at The Cumberland and Westmorland Herald, Penrith.Hi father Charles Wannop, was a tailor in Penrith and also the town bandmaster.
