This story was submitted to the People's War Site by Margaret Walsh of The Royal Star and Garter Home on behalf of Ken Smith and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was at home when the war started, in Barking, Essex. We had a lot of trouble with bombs - windows blown out etc.

I joined the Volunteer Force first, then I went into the Fleet Air Arm. Before the war I had worked for a firm dealing in aircraft parts, and I did the same sort of thing after joining up. I spent my time on Air Stations. They were on land, but called HMS. I spent time on HMS Seahawk, HMS Ariel, HMS Siskin, HMS Peregrine, HMS Heron, HMS Gannet and HMS Daedalus. They were all over England and N. Ireland.
