Prior to the war my brother Norman Allaway had been at university studying to become a teacher.
Norman joined the RAF early in 1940 and trained as a spitfire pilot. He was stationed for a short time in Johannesburg. During his many missions he was shot down and taken prisoner in Germany, from where he escaped. On his return home, the plane carrying the airmen were welcomed on touchdown by Elsie and Doris Waters, a sister act from the music hall days. Norman went back to active service and took part in the Battle of Britain flying several sorties. He survived and returned safely at the end of the war.
Although the war obviously affected his life, Norman went back to university and became a teacher in London, eventually becoming headmaster and finally Head of education for Mid Wales.
During the early 1960s he was very involved in famine relief work in Kenya for which he was nominated for an MBE, however he declined to accept.
