I can remember the latter stages of the war when the Americans were stationed very close to where I lived. They gave us sticks of chewing gum and were always very kind and joined in our games. I can also remember being carried intothe Anderson Shelter at the bottom of our garden. My father was in the fire service and he always seemed to receive an injury whilst on duty - bandaged eye, arm in a sling etc. I can remember the wartime songs like "Run Rabbit, Run" which were always on the radio and I used to hate the smell of the gas mask which my mother made us put on for practice. The awful sound of the sirens which woke us at night - the ration books spring to mind but I was unaware of really what it was about.
