My father an intelligence officer with the South Staffordshire Regiment was with a forward little group of 12 trying to reach the embattled troops at Nijmegan and Arnhem. They were advancing with the tanks on their flanks through the little Dutch Town of Oss with the enemy stalking their positions in a horrific manner.
All of a sudden a jeep can speeding along the road with the C in C colours- yes it was Monty and friends doing a quick recce under great fire - My father saw Monty at Dover before DDay and again near Oss- this showed true leadership and Dad always said that Monty hada wonderful calming influence and he truly symbolised success.
I wanted to share this particularly following Jeremy Clarkson's most moving documentary about Major Cain of South Staffs company B (later awarded VC) whose troops were embattled near Arnhem yet his South Staffordshire comrades were with Monty trying desperately to reach them.
