The following was my maternal grandfathers account of his capture at Dunkirk:
A small group of M.Ps including myself were following behind the troops retreating to the French coast ,our orders were to put out of action anything that could have been of use to the advancing German army.We came across many injured, mostly civilians, who we tried to help in whatever way we could. On reaching the area around Dunkirk we saw a sight that would never leave me,seemingly never ending queues of men leading out into the sea upto their chests in water with rifles held high. They were patiently waiting to be picked up by all sorts of crafts. My group kept on with the orders even though we were witnessing the relentless attack on the troops on the beach by the German air force and the German army that was rapidly closing in on all sides. We kept going until members of the German army had surrounded our position at which point we surrendered. My reaction to being captured was instant i sat down and cried.I was marched to a prison camp near the German-Polish border where i was imprisoned till April 1945 when i escaped and joined up with the US 5th army. I was repatriated in May 1945
