Our school was evacuated to Herefordshire during the war. We inevitably joined the Home Guard, which contained many of our senior boys and the Headmaster, who had a senior position.
The Home Guard took its share of fire-watching duties on Bromyard Church tower. The Headmaster took his share of these duties. The tower had a small turret which was kept securely locked. Only the vicar knew the contents of the turret. The Headmaster was very interested in the contents of this turret. One night he obtained the keys to it. Unfortunately as he was climbing up to the turret to unlock the door, a powerful light was switched on in the graveyard. A stentorian voice, very recognisably belonging to the vicar, boomed out across the graveyard "Get out of my tower!"
The Headmaster was so embarrassed by this incident that he immediately resigned from the Home Guard. His example was followed very gratefully by all the more cynical senior boys in the school.
