We had a large family there were 8 of us and we lived in a flat overlooking the post office building. On top of our building was a roof garden. I remember standing with my father watching the doodlebugs come over. You never knew where they would land and explode. None of them landed on Stevenage but many fell in the surrounding fields. I remember my mother making me a coat out of an old blanket. It was very difficult for her to clothe all 8 of us so you had to use what material you could get. My father kept bees so he had a special ration of sugar for them. I think they suffered a bit because we took advantage of the sugar. We had plenty of honey to eat too, so we were very lucky.
