You could not buy such things as pram toys, so my mother made some little woollen men (pink and blue) to hang on my baby brother and sister鈥檚 pram.
When my uncle in the Parachute Regiment saw them, he asked her to make one in red for him as a mascot 鈥 they called themselves the 鈥淩ed Devils鈥.
Of course all his mates wanted one, and they put them in their breast pockets.
When they were shot down and captured by the Germans, the Germans thought that these little red men were some sort of code.
