Upon returning from early morning shift on 8th May, 1945, here was an all-clear sounding continuously and we were puzzled by it. Not until we reached our camp did we discover the reason. The Germans who had hitherto been guarding us as well as those who had been in charge of the camp itself were hurriedly donning their coats. On going into our quarters we asked what all the fuss was about. 'The war'they all replied. ' What about the war?' we asked. 'It's over they said. 'We could hardly believe it, but upon looking around we could see eggs, which we had never seen in camp before and bread on the tables. These must have been taken from the Lagerfuhrer's headquarters after they had fled, One sentry had only recently said that he would prefer to be taken prisoner by the British, rather than by the Russians of whom they had great dread.
For a few hours we were in a 'no man's land' situation, but a Russian column was approaching through those Erzgebirge Mountains. These were the forces of Marshal Koniev, which had to by-pass Dresden owing to so many bodies lying around and had travelled south, whilst Marshal
