Memories of the Blitz

"This story was submitted to the People's War site by Anna Jones on behalf of James O'Grady and has been added to the site with his permission. James O'Grady fully understands the site's terms and conditions."

Dark night
And torches shine
Pencil slim
Into the night
Criss-crossing
Each other
Like sword fencers
Fighting in the
Night sky
Search-lights
Searching for the planes
Droning heavy heavy
With their weight
Their leaden weight
Of bombs
About to fall
And kill -
Excitement
Only at the
Thought
Of
Collecting shrapnel
The magic calibrated
Find
Of a delayed incendiary
Already spent
And jagged
The magic
Would protect us
And living
On the jagged edge
Was strangely
Fun
