We used to live in a small village about three miles outside York called Huntington. We had some big army camps near us and there were quite a few RAF camps. I remember seeing army convoys going through our village. York had quite a few air raids and I used to like going outside watching the searchlights criss crossing across the sky when there was a raid on. I loved doing this and wasn't frightened. The lights used to go zig-zagging across the sky picking enemy planes out. you could see them having a shooting match. You could tell the difference between the british and the german planes, the engines sounded different. The next morning we would go round the village looking for shrapnel, taking it to school to show your mates.

The all clear siren was lovely. If you heard this it meant the raid was over. There were two different sirens. The start of the raid the siren sound went up and down, that did send the shivers through you. The all clear was an even note.

The army camps used to put shows on for the villages to go to which were quite good. My mum also also used to invite half a dozen army lads back every Sunday for a game of cards, tea etc., pity I was only 12 at the time.
