I was at school in Fleetwoood during the war. I remember when war was declared because my mum sent me out of the room when Chamberlain made the announcement - she must have thought it would be too frightening for a child.
The Americans were stationed on Fleetwood pier. I was brought up Jewish and my dad who worked on the fishmarket ( he used to work at Billingsgate) brought the American Jews over to our house. They were all chefs - and we had some great meals - particularly from the Italian chef. The American lads were fantastic - polite and very generous - they gave us sweets and stockings and they brought their food over to our house and cooked it there - there were eggs, bacon, meat and lots of spaghetti. The Italian chef cooked lots of different spaghetti dishes - he was from New York. It was the best thing about the war.
The worst thing was the other food ..and worrying about our family in London. I was in London staying with my aunt when the first doodlebugs came down. I saw one - it was very frightening. I heard the buzzing and then it went silent. It dropped at Clapham Junction. We didn't know what they were. Two weeks later my aunt was blasted out by a doodle bug and she came up to Fleetwood to recover.
Being Jewish we felt very lucky to be out of Europe.
