Early in the war this incendary bomb came through the roof of 33 Hollis Street in Alvaston, Derby. It burst through the roof, hit the bottom of the airing cupboard and bounced back onto what was my bed, a single bed.
Nobody knew what had happened because of the noise. Dad went out into the hall to collect the coats to go down the air raid shelter and saw a glow at the top of the stairs coming out of my bedroom. He ran up with the sergeant out of the Royal Engineers who had been billeted with us on the Saturday night. This was Sunday night. They both picked up the bed and mattress and all the lot and dropped it into the bath, turned the taps on and it burnt itself out.
