it was september nineteen forty and i was at homeand i think it was about 10.30 when the siren went off. this wasn't the first time this had happened:i was on my own in the house with my dad on the front line and my mam at the ammunition factory. i headed straight for our anderson shelter, it was made from corrugated iron(for the roof and the side), sand bags around it. most of it was underground; it was fairly big inside though. i went inside and looked out of the window and i thought to myself: wow the luftwaffe is really going for it but just as i said that the RAFcame out and started to dog fight the oppowing planes.
then i saw a stray luftwaffe plane heading towards my house. i was terrified i hugged my teddy as hard as i could. i could hear the engines high above my head. i closed my eyes and prepared myself for the worst. when the plane past over without dropping any bombs i was most relieved more then i had ever been. until i saw where it was heading:straight to St Pauls cathedrial. it was going to fast for any RAF planes to try and shoot it down. i watchedas the plane got nearer and nearer and started dropping bombs when it got near the cathedral dealing masses of damage to innocent buildings. Then a direct hit to St pauls. i made a mental note to visit the bomb site tomorrow.
THE NEXT DAY: the next day i told my mam what happened but she already new from gossip. then i asked if i could go round there and she said as long as i was careful and i was back for tea. so i went round there and i couldn't believe what i saw there was onlu one hole in the dome cathedrial. i later learned that the bomb only destroyed the high altar.
