This story continues on from 'Fire & Water' by Richard William Holsgrove.
After serving in the Auxiliary Fire Service in the Blitz of London I then volunteered for the Royal Navy in January 1941 and I was transferred by the Royal Navy to a base called Glendower in North Wales where I was selected to serve in a special branch of the Royal Navy called the D.E.M.S where we were trained specially to help the Merchant seamen to use the guns that were put on their ships.
And we were also trained to maintain any breakages or deficiances.
I was sent to Liverpool and started my career as a D.E.M.S rating and I was on the North Atlantic Convoy's for most of the War.
When we started to get the better of the submarines and other dangerous craft, I was then transferred to the General Service of the Royal Navy & sent to Aberdeen in Scotland where I was put onto the 42nd Floatilyer and we were Minesweeping all round the Coast especially around the English Channel before the D-Day Landings in France.
