One night, when we recieved the "all clear" (from our fire-watching duties) we went to sleep in the basement of our building. When we got up to start work, to our utter horror, we found the building next to ours was completely gutted with just thye steel girders standing. This meant that a huge supply of food had also been destroyed. Somehow, the trains continued to arrive and depart each day but when I stepped out from the station into the street I found miles and miles of hosepipes strewn amongst the rubble of collapsed buildings and along the roads and pavements with very exhauisted firemen preparing their equipment for the next night, and the night after that, and the night after that. This was right in the middle of the city in close proximity to the Bank iof England and ST. Paul's Cathedral. I was amazed that they were still intact. In fact, on severeal lunchtime breaks I would visit one of the nearby undamaged churches and quietly listen to peaceful recordings of classical and church organ music and to contemplate my good fortune to have survived.
