the thing i remember as a 4year old,was being carried down to the air raid shelter in our garden,i remember looking up and seeing a beautiful stary sky,seeing dark shadows crossing the sky,i know now these were german planes,my dad was an A.R.P warden,and would often be gone for hours ,but he had fixed the shelter with electric light and a stove pot ,with a crooked chimney so that jerry wouldnt see the glow of course,we also shared the shelter with some friends who did not have a garden,and i rember the sing songs that went on,one night i remember being carried back after the all clear and seing a large red glow in the sky,there had been a bomb dropped in chesterton ,killing quite a few people.i felt frightend then but i have a sister older than me and she could always lift my spirts
