I was evacuated on September 1st 1939, to Guildford Surrey. I was 10 years old and my brother John was 8 years old. After tea and a snack in a school, we walked the streets to be taken in, as it was getting towards the evening. We were separated. I went with another girl aged 14, while my brother went to a family with two sons. Neither of us were happy. After 3 weeks I was changed to another house with a 16 year old girl. I stayed there for 3 years.

We had no school for a few weeks, just mornings in a church. The mission of the good shepherd - until I was placed in a proper school until I came home to London in 1942. I started work in 1943.
