My mother always remembered where she was when war was declared as she was "down hopping" on that September Sunday, having travelled down from Greenwich, London.
Hop picking was done by hand in those days and usually involved the whole family. It was a job and a holiday all in one but hard work all the same. People came from all over London to Kent hop gardens.
Those happy tranquil days in Pluckley would soon be replaced by the sirens, bombs and devastation that was to be London's (and many other places) fate.
