Our dad, Charlie Needham, was a gunner assigned to a convoy of Merchant Navy freighters. On March 7th, 1941/42 the freighter, Empire Attendant, was one of five vessels attacked and torpedoed by seven Nazi submarines. The damaged vessel limped into New York Harbour and was anchored off the Statue of Liberty; with it鈥檚 after mast missing. We have half a page of the Daily News which tells part of the story. Dad is photographed with the rest of the crew smiling happily and showing the
familiar British thumbs up salute. A separate picture shows 14 year old cabin boy, Ronnie Bock (?), sat astride the bulwark, grinning widely. We do remember Dad saying he lived it up in New York for a time. We are interested in any more information about this incident.
