We had rationing in Ireland. I can remember especially the sugar and the tea. The sugar seemed the worst. As a family of 5 boys and myself we all had sweet tooths and my poor mother tried to share as best she could. Invariably one would get more than their share! It's laughable now when one thinks of it, as we had our container of sugar and were told to take big bites and small sips of tea!!
In Dublin agents were recruiting workes for the various manufacturing factories opening as the ammunition factories were closing towards the end of war. This is how I came to England to work at "Bear Brand Nylons" in Liverpool. There was rationing in England as well, so we only got our tea, sugar, and butter at the shop where our coupons were. We were entitled to just one egg and a few ounces of meat each week. Bananas were a luxury, not rationed but only given to "special customers." Clothes were also on coupons but we were able to get them when we went home to Ireland and we also got plenty of orders from Liverpool!
It was a great relief when things went back to normal.
