This story was submitted to the People’s War site by CSV/´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Nottingham on behalf of Wendy Sheldon with her permission. The Author fully understands the site’s terms and conditions.

My late Grandma, Ethel Tomlinson, used to make a recipe called cheese gravy then recipe got passed on to her son Ronald who made it when he was in the Army when food was still rationed and you used whatever food you had.

Ethel and Ronald are now sadly deceased but the cheese gravy recipe got passed on to my Mother Elsie Sheldon (nee Tomlinson) who also died 10 years ago but she used to make it for me and my brother when we were growing up — we are now in our early 40’s.

Still to this day I make cheese gravy (just like Mother used to make) and we enjoy it with bacon and mushroom. Not many people have heard of it or tried it so this is the recipe:

Make a pint of gravy and cut ½lb of cheese into ½ inch slices. Lay cheese in frying pan on a low heat and when it melts stir in the gravy. Simmer gently for 2 minutes and serve!
