This story was heard as part of a reminiscence project at Myrddin Day Centre, Carmarthen, and is contributed to the People's War website with the author's permission.
I was based in Cardiff, as a drive with number 7MT (Motor Transport). My driver number was 1423588 and I had to haul the ammunition from the depot, down to the docks in Portsmouth where most of the ships left, and onto the barge. It was taken a couple of mile out to sea.
After D Day the troops needed a backup so we sailed out with supplies. We never landed at Normandy; the ammunition was taken off the barge and put onto amphibious boats called Ducks (D.U.K.W.s).
