At the start of the war I was in the Scouts and I lived in High Hurstwood. I did a year or so in the Home Guard when I was 17 years old. In June 1943 I joined the Army in the Service Corps. I had a driving course to drive trucks and I remained a driver, driving ammunition trucks supplying heavy artillery - 7.2 200lb shells and one 100lb shells.

I landed in Normandy in July. A small area was freed, so we helped to put up a barrage to enable the troops to move forward. We covered the English and Canadians and then we were involved in supplying the guns before the crossing. We fired for 5 days, driving in the dark using no lights.

We slept and ate in the lorry until the end of the war, always surrounded by explosives.

French decoration received in the celebrations. Russia took the whole of Berlin, and then was divided. Picked up Poles from gates of prison camp and returned them to Poland. We also picked up high ranking German officers.

I did 4 1/2 years service.
