I served in the Royal Navy from1942 to 1945. I completed training at Malvern and was drafted to Portsmouth for the Submarine Service. I worked on the small midget submarines or X craft as they are more correctly known. We worked in crews of four with one of the members being a diver. We went on secret overnight missions. We were towed within striking distance by a larger submarine and we would then go off on our own engines to the target. The submarine was powered by a Gardner diesel engine. We would go on mostly reconnaissance missions. I went all over the world including Hong Kong and the Atlantic. I also served with Mick McGuinness who was awarded a Victoria Cross.
When I was in Ireland during the war I got a brass clock which had came out of a German submarine. I bought it home in a white sweater which I then wrapped in a steaming bag and to this very day I still have it, hanging up in my house and it still works.
1945 became V.E day for Europe in the pub there was dancing and singing going on all day none stop and it carried through the night.
Two years after the war I met a lovely young lady. Her name was Dorothy Berk. I had met her in the village hall, and we eventually got married in 1949.
In 1950 Dorothy and I became the tenants at the Darsham Fox. Back then we were the youngest licensees to take over a pub in 1950, we were the tenants for 15 陆 years from 1950-1965.
