This is a story about my grandpa who worked in a munitions factory during the Second World War. He told this story to my mom, and she passed it on to me.
One day after work, he was on his way home through the city centre. He sat down on a bench, and then he heard the air raid sirens go off. He said he was frozen to the bench; that he was so scared he literally couldn't move. He could see the bombers coming overhead, but remained where he was. Another man, who was also walking home, ran down an opening opposite the bench.....and an instant later a blast from a bomb blew him out, killing him instantly.
I always thought how amazingly close to death my grandpa came, and how lucky he was to live, caught in the open during an air raid. This is only a short story, but it's an amzing one nonetheless.
