In the early part of 1942, the Urban District Councils of Windermere and the Lakes resolved to set up an appeal to raise 拢400,000 (Approx 拢8m in today's terms) to adopt HMS Undine, a fleet destroyer - F141. This was duly done.
She was built in 1943 at JI Thornycroft and Co Ltd of Southampton and scrapped 1965 at Newport by John Cashmore and Co ltd. She was involved in many theatres of conflict during WW2 - Operations 'Neptune', 'Meridian', 'Iceberg' and 'Musketeer' to name a few. In 1954 she was assigned to the Home Fleet.
In April 2004, the Undine and Urchine Association are holding a reunion in Windermere, and the Windermere Parish Council (of which I am Chairman) would like to put on a display to mark the occassion. We would like to hear from anybody who serverd on HMS Undine, who may have photos, memorabilia, plans of the vessel, press cuttings etc that we could use. These will of course be returned. We would also like to know how the money was raised - copies of the accounts etc.
I am also lef to believe that one of the passenger vessels' on Windermere, the MV Tern, was 'unofficially' renamed TS Undine and was used as a training ship. Does anybody remember this story?
