My great grand mother Clara Schmit and her family moved over here from Germany at the start of ww2 because of the way they were treated in their home lands. Her youngest son, Georgie Day, was about 16 when they came over and when they arrived he decided to join up. As his mothers name was german she had to change it to a british name to allow her family to fight so it was changed to Smith. Georgie joined up even though he was under age and joined the Moritania, i think. My great grandmother then received a telegram informing her that he was missing believed dead and that the ship had gone down. This informaton was too much for her and as the years went on she developed senial dementia and died never knowing if her baby had actually died or was somewhere else.
