I was taken to the gates of Buckingham Palace on the 8th May 1945 where a crowd gathered chanting "We Want The King". Eventually the King, Queen, two Princesses, and Sir Winston Churchill appeared on the Palace balcony, to which the crowd went estactic.
After the celebrations we formed an impromtu band and marched around the Mall banging metal utensils with a stick just to make a loud noise at our joy of the end of the War. The evening was concluded with a display of switched on search lights that illuminated the night sky.
Everyone was overjoyed and excited that it was all over. There were thousands who gathered that day. And that is my memory of VE Day 1945.
