This story has been submitted to the People's War website personally by Don Tempest of the Lancshomeguard and added to the site with his permission.
It was the winter of 1940/41 and I was five years old. Dalton is close to Barrow which had been bombed quite a lot at the beginning of the war.
I had become used to quiet a lot of unusual noises, but on a particular Sunday morning I remember waking up, in the dark, and hearing a very unusual noise. It sounded very much like a roaring.
My bedroom was at the rear of the house, and the noise seemed to be coming from the front.
I got up from bed and ran through to our lounge, which was on the first floor, and I drew back the curtains.
I looked out and was amazed, there on the road, right outside our house, was a large waggon. lying on its side. From the back of the lorry came the roaring of lions, very loud, and angry.
My mother came to join me and we then realised that the vehicle was a Circus Waggon, coming from Barrow to avoid the bombing and it had turned over.
You can guess that we didn't go out of the house until it was taken away.
