THIS STORY IS SUBMITTED BY A VOLUNTEER ON BEHALF OF RADIO BRISTOL ACTION DESK AT CITY OF BRISTOL COLLEGE.

鈥淚 was evacuated to Cornwall about 1940, but was fortunate enough to find myself amongst a group of ten placed into a huge mansion near Truro. It was owned by the Copeland family, who were extremely rich but they were never around. We were looked after by the housekeepers, the Lady of the house (Mrs Copeland) was forever jetting off in her car to various cities. I remained there for two and a half years before I was taken to a much less pleasant placement by the sea in Perran Porth. I was sharing with forty odd others and disliked it so much that Mother came and took me back to Bristol. She worked at Filton Airport, which was rather nerve wracking at times when we could see what looked like birds flying over the airport, only to discover they were Spitfires! My Father ran a family business and my brother served in the Army.
鈥淚 was sent to live with my Grandparents on Stapleton Road, the house is still present opposite Ikea I believe!
鈥淎fter a good few years I moved out one Saturday to Bishopston, only to discover the very next day, that my Grandparents鈥 house had been completely bombed to the ground! Thankfully, they both survived but were confined to hospital for some time. The same bomber followed the railway line near Cromwell Road all the way up to bomb Montepellier Station. He even bombed the gas mains of my road, which caused a huge fiery explosion only to come round again at hit the water mains! This put out the fire and gave us a moment to joke and laugh about the situation!
鈥淎fter the war had passed I worked for the Post Office (GPO) then came to work at the Cathedral Garage which used to where the City of Bristol College Green College is now! We even once worked on the car of Winston Churchill himself, it weighed about three tonnes and kitted out with bullet proof metal!鈥
