In 1941, my mother and I were staying with grandparents. A raid was taking place, when we heard a bang close to the front door of the house. An incendiary bomb had dropped, so my 10 year old cousin and I (at 12) went outside and put sandbags around. We looked at the sky and saw a parachute descending. Dashing back, we locked the door, thinking we had been invaded. Next minute a tremendous explosion! The parachute was not carrying a person as we thought; it was carrying a landmine. Upon exploding it demolished two streets of houses.
Thank God we were all safe.
