This story was submitted to the People's War site by Tanya Proudlove of Lancshomeguard on behalf of Lilian Brinn and has been added with her permission.

I was 9 when the war began, my sister Audrey was 11 and Winnie 7. We were evacuated from Edge Hill station. Our Dad was the train driver! When we arrived in Wales we were taken to a school hall where we were chosen like cattle. People "chose" children based on what they wanted - some wanted boys to work on their farms, others wanted very young children. I was chosen, along with Winnie, by an older lady called Mrs Jones. Audrey was chosen by Mr and Mrs Prichard who already had 3 children. After about 3 months our Mum was evacuated from Liverpool due to the bombings and her ill health after giving birth. We were then lucky enough to be re-united, livng together on a local farm belonging to Mr Williams. We lived there for 2 years.

We returned to Liverpool in 1944 - but had no home and had to live with our auntie for a month. We also had no school to go to as they had to close. Eventually our family was given a house in Broad Green. The houses were classed as "condemned" but as there was a shortage of houses we had to live there. Audrey started work at 15 yrs old at 'The Automatic' where she wired telephones for the RAF. She married her husband while he was on leave. He then went off to Europe with the army for 3 years.

We still remember being scared of all the noise during the bombings and to this day I am terrified of thunder.
