Every Saturday, my father who had fought in World War 1 and was an officer in the Home Guard, used to take us into town (Manchester).I used to wear a Siren Suit like Winston Churchill. We used to go into Lewis's and a toy shop called Wiles (on the corner of Lewis's). I saw Father Christmas there. On Market St there was a downstairs bar with high stools and my brother and I shared a meat pie. I went to the Odeon and saw the Wizard of Oz or Snow white. The siren(air raid) sounded, we had to take shelter. Our shelter was under the Long Bar on Oxford road. It was full of American soldiers who used to use the bar.
