Dear Mum,
From 3.20 yesterday afternoon until 8 last night, I made the sitting room into a refuge room. We have stuck up the windows and plugged the fireplace with newspapers and damp rags. I have taken two blankets off the bed and they are in the sitting room already wet to be put up immediately if anything happens. Sunday about 11.30am and again early this morning at 3.00 the A.R. warning signal was given, so we all ran down stairs and sat in the Refuge Room until the 'All Clear' was given. Did our hearts beat fast? It mentioned the incident on the wireless this morning and said they saw aircraft approaching the East Coast, but it appeared that it was friendly aircraft. All yesterday morning and afternoon Dad was at the Library fitting on gas masks. We are going to the Stores this afternoon to put our name down on their list for coal, as it said that we were to register on the wireless straight away.
Cyril rang up yesterday and asked you to go down that evening if you hadn't anything else to do, but told him you had gone off to Worcester. He says that he had to go to London this morning. Winnie is keeping all right, but Cyril said that if things got very bad that he would send her away.

I rang up Evelyn this morning, but she is on duty again - all day yesterday also. Lancaster's have turned into a Fire Station and the Sirens are sounded from there.
It seems funny here if you look out of the window everyone is carrying their gas masks and we shall have to do the same this afternoon when we both go out. We have bought some brown paper and stuck that up at the windows in the hall and on the stairs so that we can have the lights on.
Dad has his helmet and another gas mask.
One Saturday night we had a very bad storm. The lightning was very vivid indeed. They called Dad out on Saturday and he was out until 12 night. He certainly got caught in it. I don't think I have any further news to say, I will write to you as soon as I know I am going to Bray. Love to you all
