A picture showing my father and his ditty box
My father was in the Navy for 26 years. He was recalled at the outbreak of war.
He served on a number of ships - detailed on his service record which I still have.
Pembroke 28 September 1938- 3 October 1938
Greenwich 31 July 1939 - 17 February 1941
Pembroke 18 February 1941 - 20 November 1941
Warspite 21 November 1941 - 13 November 1943
Pembroke 14 November 1943 - 31 December 1943
Pembroke IV 1 January 1944 - 21 August 1945
Pembroke 22 August 1945 - 18 October 1945
Discharged 12 September 1946
Every sailor had a ditty box in which they kept their personal effects. This box was made of wood and if the boat sank it would float.
My father was presented with many medals for his service during WW2.
