My husband was a stoker on board H.M.S. Undine during WW2. He was there when they dropped a atom bomb in the Philipines killing approx 45,000 women, men and children it was horrendous. All this my husband is trying to remember from memory. All the soldiers and sailors were not supposed to carry diaries which my husband didn't do, but some did.
He served all through the war and when he came back through the Suez Canal narrowly missing the sides of the canal in the boat H.M.S. Undine. When he got to the Isle of Capri the highlight of the whole War experience was seeing the singer 'Gracie Fields'.
When my husband came back from the War I remembered all the presents that he brought back. Amongst them 2 stuffed toy pandas, kimono dressing gowns also lots of fruit such as peaches, bananas and pomegranates. I dished these out amongst my own five children and the kiddies in the street, they had never seen a pomegranate or a banana in there lives, and as for cutting the pomegranate in half and eating the jucy seeds with a pin it was quite something.
I could tell you lots of little stories about just after the war when rationing was still on.
After the war we went onto have two more children making seven in all. We have been married 68 years this July and we are both 91 years of age, myself being 92 in August.
