I had my first LIAP in November 1945

I have already mentioned this scheme in my article about ULM in Germany but to save you the bother of looking up that article I reprint the details here.

From about 1944 there was an Army scheme in operation called L.I.A.P., which stood for Leave in Addition to Python. Python was the code name for posting home troops that had done four years or more abroad and were due for home posting, whereas LIAP was leave that was now being given to those who had "only" (my inverted commas) done two years and nine months overseas service.

In November 1945 I became qualified for LIAP and was able to spend a wonderful month in London.

It was 鈥榯he done thing鈥 in those days to pack as many shows as possible into one鈥檚 home leave, particularly if, as in my case, one lived in London. When I got back to Trieste, after my leave, I made a collage of programs from just some of the shows that I saw and the list makes interesting reading.
1. Ivor Novello in 鈥楶erchance to dream鈥
2. Terrence Rattigan鈥檚 鈥淲hile the sun shines鈥
3. Revudeville at the Windmill Theatre
4. Another farce 鈥淚s your honeymoon really necessary?鈥
5. 鈥淐an-Can鈥 with music by Offenbach
6. 鈥淗igh Time鈥 at the London Palladium
7. The farce 鈥淔ifty-Fifty鈥 by Larson Brown
8. No room at the Inn
9. The Brothers Karamazov

Message 1 - WINDMILL THEATER

Posted on: 24 December 2005 by LIMEYLASS

During WWII my uncle was stage manager at the famous "We never closed" theater in London....I remember going back stage when I was about 7 years old and watching my cousin and my uncle place the nudes on their pedestals - it was very exciting and I'm sure my cousin who was about 15 years old was delighted. Now I can't wait to see the movie with judi Dench....and maybe through this e-mail I could trace my cousin Alfred Brandon or Al Brown who nobody has heard from in many years.

Message 2 - WINDMILL THEATRE

Posted on: 25 December 2005 by Ron Goldstein

Hi Limeylass

I went back to my Album and studied the Windmill Program that is included in the collage that I have shown.

It reads:
15th Year Revudeville.
194th Edition
A Vivien Van Damm Production
Windmill (We Never Closed" Theatre.

I also see that the program cost 6p !

The actual show, as I remember it, was very sedate but beautifully staged and I also remember the long queues that formed outside in the hope of getting 'return' tickets.

I havn't seen the film but it has had very good reviews.

Best wishes

Message 1 - velveeta cheese

Posted on: 28 December 2005 by LIMEYLASS

Towards the end of WW2 I worked for RKO pictures in Manchester. A great thrill was to receive a care package from our American sister company in Hollywood....I remember some of the items in the package...nylon stockings, fruit cake, dried eggs and a 3 lb. slab of Velveeta cheese...which I have loved ever since...I always have it in the fridge...I'd like to hear from other members and start up a correspondence from an ex Brit now living in the USA
