This story was submitted to the People's War Site for Three Counties Action by Joan Smith on behalf of Mr S P Willis, a visitor to Dunstable at War on 13th August 2005, and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

In 1944 I was 18 years old and stationed aat RAF Peploe, a training station for glider pilots. We were all the time ready for action, and carried everything with us, full kit, and we wore gumboots. On this occasion suddenly some of us were asked if we wanted to take the opportunity for a trip on a bomber which was flying to Wing in Buckinghamshire. From there it would not be difficult to get into London, so of course, although we had no permission, no parachutes for the flight, and certainly weren't dressed for the West End, we went. We got to Wing, and then Aylesbury, and from there we took the train to London. We went to the London Palladium where there was a wonderful show with Tommy Trinder and other big stars. Everyone else there was in best bib and tucker - and we had all our gear and gumboots. However a young couple in civvies noticed us and invited us to join them in their box. We had a memorable evening.
