One night in May 1941,Nottingham had an air raid which became known as the Nottingham Blitz. From where we lived to the east of the city,it looked as if the whole of the city was on fire.
Next morning I went to school as normal, the bus making various detours because of the unexploded bombs. We heard there was such a bomb on the street at the back of the school.Nevertheless lessons proceded as usual till lunch time.We boys were in the playground when we decided to go and look at the bomb.As we were running along Bluecoat Street, somebody called ,that the headmaster, Captain Mearles was coming.
We all turned round and ran back to the playground, then the bomb went off.It was said that the headmasters wife's cat was blown over the roof.
There were no more lessons that afternoon, because we had to clean up the school. My mother was far from pleased when I told her.
The headmaster was unlikely to have been there, since he was based at the drill hall on Derby road during the war.
I was at the school from September 1939 till August 1944
