My father left for South Africa/India/Burma, I think in 1942 or 1941. I was born in 1939 and have no
recollection of him before 1946. I remember walking along a road close to my own (Mayville Road) in 1945
knowing that it was VJ Day and that my Daddy would come home from the war soon. It was a very sunny day and
the light fell across the street to the opposite pavement. There was a girl walking there and the sun shone
on her ginger hair and she was pretty and I was swelling with joy.
My Dad came back in 1946; we were expecting him so when he knocked on the door we rushed to meet him.
He kissed my Mum. He was as brown as a berry, looked fantastically well, and had a standard army kitbag stuffed
to the brim. On top was a bag of sweets for me.
