I was in the armed forces and was billeted towards Venlow in Holland near the German border. I spent a fortnight staying on a farm. The daughter of the elderly farmers had an infected arm, so wasn鈥檛 able to milk the cows properly, so I offered to help. (I was a farmers son in England) It was odd because the cow wouldn鈥檛 let me milk it by hand, the lady pointed out that in Holland they milk from the other side so I continued to milk, much to the elderly farmers amusement. He explained that milking is designated as a woman鈥檚 job in Holland.
I tried to lead on of the farmers horses around the field. However it would not move an inch for me. This was because the horse did not understand English! Whilst staying on the farm I also learned how to clogg dance which was fun.
At the end of the war a group of soldiers were passing the farm and the daughter of the farmers ran out and gave a letter to one of the soldiers. Can you believe the soldier she gave the letter too lived in the same village as me. I met the soldier in my village but unfortunately he lost the letter. I tried to make contact again but couldn鈥檛 find the farm.
