We all have certain memories
Which linger from our youth,
Some may be imagined
But most are the truth.
I grew up in Wartime
My early days are vagur,
But many things I do recall
From these youthful days.
One such thing I bring to mind,
From Schooldays in the War,
Each week we saved up
"Tanners",
And we didn't know what for.
You see the "Spitfire" reigned
supreme,
Our Air force needed many
Each plane cost
拢5000.00,
(Today this seems funny)
The man who was responsible
for this wonder plane
was born and grew up locally,
Reginald Mitchell was his name.
His plane was elegant annd sleek
and very very fast
Few others made around that
time
Could this one surpass.
A symbol of defiance,
It was feared by our foes,
It flew to save our country
Successfully we now know.
At the outbreak of the war
Each plane we has was
precious,
Young men flew and gave their
lives
The death rate was horrendous.
50 years ago this year
The end of World War Two,
We think about these same
young men
Now famous as "The Few"
Alas, Reginald Mitchell died
and hadn't lived to see
His plane in action for his land
It wasn't meant to be.
He now goes down in history,
We honour his name,
our museum has a "Spitfire"
Books recall his fame.
As, we remembered days of
war,
We're thankful that we won,
helped by this very special
plane
Designed by our City's "Son".
