My late Father was a young airman serving at West Freuch when he met and married my mother (a local girl). I was born in 1943 and although my father served in many other places at home and abroad, he was back in Wigtownshire when the war ended. His name was David Mc Leod he was one of a family of 13 born in Cowdenbeath Fife.I guess I still have many relatives in that locality but unfortunately have lost all contact since my Dad died in 1970.One of my favourite stories told to me by my parents is as follows.
When I was a baby we lived in the small fishing villiage of Portlogan. One day there was both great excitement and anxiety as a mine had been spotted floating in the bay, the tide bringing it ever nearer. There was a small stone built peir and had the mine hit this there was imminent danger of dammage to the nearby homes.
Consequently the villiagers were evacuated to what was felt to be a safe distance.
Eventually the tide turned and the mine began to bob back out to sea. However as it reached the rocks further out it exploded and blew a hole in the side of the local tourist attraction. "Logan Fishpond".
Some of the fishes were killed and others may have escaped but the fish pond was out of commision for the next ten years.The local people, including Mum and myself as a 3year old would walk along from the villiage and paddle in the shallow pond. It was eventually restored and reopened by The Queen Mother in 1955 and is still a very popular tourist attraction to this day.
