I went in to the army in 1939 - I joined the Royal Artillery and was sent to North Africa. Later I was blown up on the shores of Italy - both of my legs were completely smashed. I was taken to hospital in Algiers and from there I was airlifted to the Nrth Staffs Infirmary. My right leg had to be rebroken - two doctors quite literally jumped on it to break it.
