During World War Two Olive worked as a nurse in Naval hospitals on the south coast. Among the many servicemen and women she helped treat was Douglas Bader.
She was quite a character in her youth and partial to a man in uniform! One night in the blackout she was returning to Wednesfield on leave. As the train approached Wolverhampton station it stopped and a serviceman who had been asleep in the carriage woke with a start. He asked Olive where he was and when she said Wolverhampton he grabbed his bag, opened the carriage door and stepped out. Unfortunately it had stopped on the bridge over the Willenhall Road and he disappeared over the parapet, landing on the road. Luckily he survived the fall, suffering a broken leg.
