The German bombing raids over Liverpool and the Wirral took place during my school days at West Kirby High School for Girls. One of the schools in Birkenhead was bombed at this time and some of their pupils came to share our school. There was a severe period of night and daytime raids and the air raid siren would sound around 9 am each morning following a night raid. Assembly in the main school hall had just commenced and we were immediately marched out to our respective shelters alongside the school complete with our gas masks and iron rations. One particular morning some of our boyfriends from Caldy Grammar School were cycling along Meols drive at around 9am and decided that they would like to take cover in our shelters. The teachers were quite up to their tricks and ushered them into the shelters with the eleven year olds. The boys were not impressed and trouped out when the 'All Clear' sounded looking most dejected!
Although we all experienced difficulties and dangers during the war years I feel that a valuable lesson was learnt which would be a great benefit in our future - learning to face up to and cope with problems with courage.
I attended West Kirby High School from 1939 - 1946, I can remember some of the teachers who taught us during the War Years.
